Atreyu At The Masquerade

Atreyu: Brandon Saller-Drums/Vocals. Daniel Jacobs-Guitar. Mark McKnight-Bass. Travis Miguel-Guitar. Alex Varkatzas-Vocals.

This little band is from Orange County California. They don't exactly suck. They put on a show. They sell the music, but I have some bitches. The name of the band-from the fucking Never Ending Story? As little children, did they say we are going to start a rock band? -Metallic rock. What flaming fuck-up branded a metal band metallic rock? Metal magazines are the ones pushing Atreyu to the asses of the masses, not Rolling Stone. MTV2 plays the videos, so which community does this band belong to? The straightedge, hardcore metal kids are the ones that support these guys and buy their records. Since when has metal become a dirty word? -Lyrically the band pushes nothing that is all that different than any other band out there. The band explores the same old kill myself, vampires, and death themes that DEATH METAL bands cover-but since they dress up in teddy bear shirts and are from California I guess that makes them precious and alternative. -I read some reviews that are labeling the band SCREAMO like fucking Killswitch Engage. IF this band is SCREAMO, that so is Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, and Cattle Decapitation. Shouldn't Chris Barnes be labeled alternative for being an advocate of marijuana? -The point I am trying to make is this. Metal is metal. All of these bastard sub-categories are a simple-minded attempt from corporate machines to make their bands stand out and be different than every other band out there. -Don't fall for it. Next somebody is going to call Black Sabbath, Dio, and Judas Priest rock music. -Music is music, and when it is done well people will notice. The guitars in this band are more like punk than anything. They are warped and fall out of tune(Travis Miguel and Daniel Jacobs), but that actually adds to the fucking charm of the music and allows you to feel that pull and tug inside of yourself. -Brandon Saller is the definite standout. He handles drums and vocals and has a style that reminds me of Fred LeBlanc from Cowboy Mouth. Mark McKnight on bass is the new kid on the block, and it looked like touring all summer has made him comfortable on stage. Alex Varkatzas on vocals is interesting. He brings a lot of intensity and energy to the stage. He was a fucking pleasure to watch live. -This band is a lot of fun to catch live. It wasn't the most memorable concert experience I have ever had, but it was pretty fucking excellent. If you are in to the almighty Hatebreed or Agnostic Front, you will fucking love an Atreyu show. Notable tracks live were American Hollow and My Sanity On The Funeral Pyre.

-Personally, I would love to see them do a straight hardcore punk album.
