Simon – Cataract
Cataract may be the best fucking band you have never heard from in the United States. Metal Blade is always interested in bringing you what is new and what is best. Simon, the guitarist, took some time out to speak to me about Cataract....Read On.
MI: What is your birthday?
Simon: February 4th, 1971.
MI: Describe the music of Cataract.
Simon: A mix of Slayer and Hatebreed, it's all raw in your face and totally direct music.
MI: What is your favorite track off of the new CD?
Simon: Song number one, number two, and the last song as well.
MI: Tell us something that you think we should know about each one of the band members.
Simon: They're all lovely. We've all been friends for twelve years now and we've been in the band for seven years. They're all freaks.
MI: Who were you influences as a musician growing up?
Simon: There were a lot of different musicians growing up. Slayer was a big influence and also Inhibitions. Lyrically it was Henry Rollins that influenced me.
MI: How does a musician become a metal guitar player?
Simon: You pick up your guitar, take some lessons, and you rock n roll.
MI: What place do you think extreme music serves in the music scene?
Simon: I think it's the most important outlet for kids who don't know how to get rid of their anger. It's a very basic and raw outlet for kids to let their anger and frustration out.
MI: If you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring one book, one CD, one bottle of booze, and one person, what would they be?
Simon: I would bring Slayer, a book of survival, water, and my girlfriend.
MI: Where do you see the direction of Cataract heading over the next five years?
Simon: We just on the way we did. We workout, write down music we play live, put out CDs, and bring the music close to everyone that wants to listen to it.
MI: There are 326 dead Russians as a result of a school siege. Half of them were children. What are our thoughts on this?
Simon: It's part of a big fucked up society that we live in.
MI: Who do you think is more honest; US news or European news?
Simon: There's no question... European.
MI: What CD is in your CD player right now?
Simon: I will always listen to something from Slayer.
MI: What three bands would you like Cataract to tour with?
Simon: There are a lot of bands we'd like to tour with. Cannibal Corpse, Hatebreed, or Unearth. Pantera if they were still around.
MI: What bands do you think have most influenced the music you play?
Simon: Hatebreed and Slayer. All the news bands right now are making a big impact.
MI: What are your thoughts about legalizing marijuana in America?
Simon: I can't judge for the US. I don't know the US too much. It was legalized years ago in Holland and the easier you can get it the less interest people have in it it seems. I don't think it's too bad to legalize it.
MI: Tell us the difference between being an extreme metal band in Europe and an extreme metal band in America.
Simon: I don't think the European bands tour as much as the American bands do.
MI: If you could be a super hero who would you be?
Simon: Right now it would be Kerry King from Slayer.
MI: If you were God for a week what would you change?
Simon: I would make all the wars go away.
MI: What's your opinions on George W. Bush?
Simon: I think he's a dumbass. He's one the most stupid persons I have ever seen in politics.
MI: What do you think about the US involvement in the Middle East?
Simon: I think it's a good thing. I know the basic idea of this is a good thing. I do not agree that it is the right way to fight a war though.
MI: What are your thoughts on Zetro leaving Exodus and the recently organized 'Fuck Off Zetro' Festival?
Simon: I don't think they should have made any story about it. I think it's no use to argue about something that hard even if Zetro is an asshole. Just leave him and let him go. It's a really stupid thing to do a festival like that. Maybe later on they will want to get back together and think what a bad decision it was.
MI: What message would you like to send to Slayer?
Simon: Keep on rocking for the next twenty years and take us on tour.
MI: Do you believe in psychics?
Simon: That's stupid... I'm just kidding.
MI: What do you think makes Cataract the most important band out there?
Simon: I don't think we're the most important band at the moment. We're an important band because we think about things that are important on earth. I think we put out a record that is open and is not boring.
MI: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Simon: Dead Poets Society.
MI: If a movie was made about your life who would you want to play you and what would the theme song be?
Simon: Jack Nicholson or Robert De Niro. The theme song would be by The God Machine. It would be a graveyard kind of song.
MI: Who is your favorite soccer player?
Simon: The player I really adore is a guy that played for Holland. He was a genius player. At the moment I really like a lot.
MI: Who, living or dead, would you like to have lunch with most?
Simon: James Dean.
MI: What CD do you think someone new to Cataract should buy?
Simon: The new one, no other one. The new one is 100% Cataract.
MI: How did you guys get involved with Metal Blade?
Simon: First of all I'm really happy we have the chance. Our last record got a lot of attention and the first one as well. There's no label I like more than Metal Blade.
MI: What in the world pisses you off the most?
Simon: Stupidity pisses me off a lot. Also sexists and racists.
MI: If you could wave a magic wand and make anything happen for Cataract right now, what would they be?
Simon: That we could do a big tour and make a living off of it.
MI: Would you guys like to be on Ozzfest next year?
Simon: If that happens I will be so happy. That will be the most amazing thing ever. If I have the chance to do it I will do it right away.
MI: What is the next new music project for the band?
Simon: Concentrate on playing a lot of shows. We're going to be on tour soon. By the end of next year we will have a new CD.
MI: Would you consider yourself a dog person or a cat person?
Simon: I'm a dog person.
MI: What is the worst job you've ever had?
Simon: Honestly I've never had a 'worst' job.
MI: If your fans could do one thing for you what would it be?
Simon: Talk about Cataract all over the world.
MI: If you had a million dollars to donate to a charity what charity would it be?
Simon: I would donate it to World Vision charity because they care about all the poor children. Also to Animal Liberation.
MI: What message would you like to send to your fans?
Simon: Keep on listening to Cataract and supporting us. Keep on listening to heavy metal and hardcore as well. Believe in what you do.
MI: What is your website?
Thanks Simon! We WILL come see you when you come to the states!
