Echovalve: Dirty Little Secret

Echovalve: Jamie Scanlin-Bass. Billy Nielsen-Drums. Charlie-Vocals. Jay Langston-Guitars.

The South is producing some ass kicking music lately. -Tree Sound Studios seems to be at the front of this new fucking wave of rock music. Elton John has hit Tree Sound, and so have the Indigo Girls -even fucking Aerosmith is a client, but what really stands out to me is the quality of the independent bands they are recording -like Echovalve and Greedy White Citizens. -So let's talk about Echovalve, a label ready rock band from Atlanta, GA. Echovalve is a straight up rock band that will remind you of Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, REM, Sound Garden, and The Rolling Stones. They are just fucking excellent. -Charlie, the singer, has a stage presence that will remind you of a young Bruce Spingsteen. His pure rock voice will draw you in like Steven Tyler. Charlie is clean cut and hard core at the same time, and you are going to like him. I really like his vocals on this demo CD. He really stands out on the title track-Dirty Little Secret. -Jay Langston is an exceptional fucking guitarist. Think of John Lennon when you think of his style-laid back and intense all at the same time. -Billy Nielsen is a stand out drummer in Atlanta and on the CD. He is solid in his style, like Joey Kramer. That solid style keeps Echovalve rock and not metal-I would love to see him branch out a little and be like Charlie Benate, but that is just the metal head in me. -Jamie Scanlin on bass is interesting and you can hear shades of Frank Bello in there. Feel that fucking restraint. -I like this little Atlanta band, and they are going to break out somewhere. Watch for them near you-they were even invited to NYC to play CBGB's. They have a great sound. Their live sound is exactly like their fucking CD-and it is fucking excellent. The standout track on the demo is Dirty Little Secret.

Billy Nielsen comes from an experienced musical background. His father was ranked as one of the "top ten drummers in the state" before Billy was born. Billy has enjoyed playing the drums before he could even take his first steps. His ear, technique, and style developments were influenced by great percussionists such as Buddy Rich, Chad Sexton (311), Dave Grohl, Carter Beauford (DMB), Jose Pasillas (Incubus), Dave Weckl and Chad Wackerman. Although he never took an instructional drum lesson, he credits his ability and "chops" to the lessons he learned while on the drumline.

Echovalve has allowed Billy the opportunity to experiment and express his style as a professional percussionist more so than any other musical group he has played with in the past. Without intrusion, he brings a powerful sound that displays his presence while allowing invention and interplay with the other musicians of Echovalve.

Charlie started singing at a very young age. When he was in high school, he knew he wanted to be a musician for the rest of his life. Charlie put together his first band, and became very successful in the Atlanta music scene. After six years of writing songs, playing guitar, and singing in the band, he knew it was time for a change. He joined forces with what is now Echovalve.

Echovalve is a welcome change for Charlie. With freedom from having to play guitar, he has the space to explore his vocal range and performance as Echovalve's front man.

Jamie graduated from Gainesville High School in 2001 and then began attending college. Determined to get his education, and have a good time doing it, he was dealt a tragic blow. His father was diagnosed with melanoma, and the cancer was terminal. Jamie moved home to be with his father for the next six months before he passed away on June 27, 2003.

Struggling to figure out what to do with the rest of his life, Jamie found himself ready to give up, finding his only refuge in music. "God spoke to me clearer than ever before. He told me to share the music."

Since his father passed, Jamie has taken every opportunity to play music, and has balanced time between several bands. He now attends the Atlanta Institute of Music for bass guitar and is looking forward to a prosperous career with Echovalve.

Jay has an interesting and unique background. Always passionate about music, it took a back-seat for years to the baseball career Jay had worked so hard to build. After attending college on a scholarship for just three years, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He signed to a minor league contract and left town to pursue his fortune. After the first year, he began hooking up with local bands and playing gigs after games. He knew then what he really wanted to do with his life. He began writing song after song, honing his craft while he struggled with the decision he would later have to make.

After just three short years and making it to double A, Jay retired in spring training of 2002 to chase down his dream of playing music. Echovalve is his fourth band, but Jay has learned from his previous musical experience and is enjoying the freedom he has to give the ideas he has worked on for so long. "It's all about finding guys who are musically compatible with you, friends who get along, and a hell of a lot of drive and dedication. If you can put together a band with that formula, and discipline yourself to making the sacrifice to do whatever it takes, you've got a chance!"
