Jeff Waters: The Annihilator
Music Incider interviews Jeff Waters -
Music Incider Magazine
I sincerely like Jeff Waters-last of the independent thinkers. He works for himself. He controls his own career. He does not have a day job. People know who he is and like him. He is funny and honest, talented too. Shit, Dave Mustaine wanted him for Megadeth at one point. -Another important thing to note about Jeff is that he is yet another Roadrunner castoff managing to make a living and perform music that is true to his vision. It gives me hope that honest AND talented people manage to have careers without selling their souls.
MI: What is your birthday?
Jeff: February 13th . 1966.
MI: Tell us about the new CD 'Schizo Deluxe.'
Jeff: I give it a 3rd best CD of my career.
MI: What's your favorite track off the new CD?
Jeff: I get to pick more than one because I'm not just the guitar player. I'm the bass player, the producer, the writer, and the engineer. As the lyrics writer I would pick 'Warbird', as the guitar player I'd pick 'Drive', as the songwriter I'd pick 'Maximum Satan', and as the musician I'd pick 'Like Father, Like Gun.'
MI: Tell us how the CD came together.
Jeff: We did a record called "All For You" in 2004, we did a quick tour with Judas Priest over seas, we came back and decided to do a few things outside of Annihilator for a while and after that we decided to write some more music for Annihilator again.
MI: Who do you think the greatest guitar player of all time is?
Jeff: Van Halen.
MI: What happened with Annihilator?
Jeff: We were with Roadrunner from 89 to 93 and they let us go, which was a good thing because we were playing 80's traditional style music.
MI: How did you feel when Dave Mustaine asked you and Dimebag to audition for Megadeth?
Jeff: I was shaky and nervous. That was in 89 when I was on tour with Testament on the Practice What You Preach tour. Chuck Billy stormed in and kicked the door down and told me Dave Mustaine was on the phone for me and I remember being very nervous about that. I called him back later and told him I couldn't audition for the band because I just signed my first record deal and it was doing very well at the time.
MI: Where do you see your music career going in the future?
Jeff: A kid coming from Ottawa Canada, which in 85 was the biggest anti-metal place on Earth, putting an album out, touring around the world, putting a second album out that sold bigger, touring with Judas Priest and playing arenas and festivals, and now we're at CD #11 and still touring with Judas Priest and still touring over seas... You don't really wish for anything else. Everything else you get is just a bonus.
MI: What made you decide to become a musician?
Jeff: From when I was very young it was hearing songs that had an electric guitar in them.
MI: What's the most fucked up thing you've seen on tour?
Jeff: 1991 we were playing in some Croatia or Serbia area a couple days before the war started. Dime and I got drunk and pissed on the deli tray. Long story short Dime and I were drunk out of our minds later on that night when it was time to leave so they put complimentary deli trays on our bus and told everyone except us two not to eat it. Basically I ate Dime's piss and he ate mine.
MI: Have you ever inhaled?
Jeff: I toured with Pantera for 2 months, what do you think?
MI: What's your opinion on the legalization of marijuana?
Jeff: More people beat their wives or husbands or other people drinking booze they bought at the store than they do smoking pot. The hard stuff I'm not educated enough on it to know what the impact would be on society.
MI: Who would you compare your vocal and playing style to?
Jeff: Lyrics were designed to be like James Hetfield but I don't have the vocal talent or the voice. As far as playing I basically looked at guys like Eddie Van Halen and very select few others.
MI: Do you believe in psychics and the paranormal?
MI: If you were God for a week what would you change?
Jeff: Eliminate hate and eliminate poverty...
MI: Where were you when Dime got shot and how did it affect you?
Jeff: I remember coming down to my computer that morning after and checking my E-mail and the inbox was unusually full. The first thing I did after that was went to Blabbermouth to find out more.
MI: What do you want people to know about you?
Jeff: I love Heavy Metal, that's about it. I try to be a nice person.
MI: If you could design a memorial for Dime what would it be?
Jeff: The Dime Rock Cafe chain.
MI: How has the music industry treated you over the years?
Jeff: I always break it down into territories. It's completely different in Canada, the US, Japan... In general I'd say some places are great and some are not. It's like complaining about the music downloads. It's here to stay so you have to deal with it. You can't really complain about where you are and why a label won't promote you, you just have to deal with it.
MI: What advice would you give any young band getting into the music industry?
Jeff: Beware of the whole process. Management, tour agents, record companies, everyone... Learn it yourself and take care of it yourself. Everybody says get a lawyer but lawyers can fuck you too.
MI: If you could be a comic book hero which one would you be?
Jeff: Krusty the Klown.
MI: What's your favorite movie of all time?
Jeff: Some of the Exorcist movies and Scarface.
MI: If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring one book, one CD, and your favorite soda what would it be?
Jeff: My kids, the CD would be Back in Black, and a book about Eddie Van Halen if he had one.
MI: What 3 people would you like to have lunch with?
Jeff: If I could have desert also it would be Angelina Jolie, Kylie Minogue, and Eddie Van Halen. The first two would be for different reasons than the last.
MI: What is the worst job you've ever had?
Jeff: Dishwasher at a restaurant.
MI: Do you have a message for your fans?
Jeff: Listen to my record and see if you like it.
MI: What is your favorite quote?
Jeff: Oh Hansel he's so hot right now.
MI: What is your website?
