Tesla – Into the Now

California’s own Tesla band members include: Jeff Keith (vocals), Frank Hannon (lead guitar), Brian Wheat (bass guitar), Troy Luccketta (drums) and Dave Rude (guitar.)

Formed in Sacramento in 1984 as the City Kidd, the band smartly changed its name to Tesla, after 18th century Serbian inventor and electrical engineer, Nikola Tesla.

Tesla was never a glam band (also known as Gay LA Metal.) At a time when other heavy metal groups wore their hair high and carried makeup and leather over from the 1970s, Tesla sported t-shirts and jeans. Believe it or not, most of the band members were hard-working at day jobs.

Tesla’s first album was Mechanical Resonance in 1986. Do you remember Modern Day Cowboy? If you do, you deserve a t-shirt and an all day sucker. The second album was The Great Radio Controversy.

Tesla’s 1990 release, Five Man Electrical Band included hits: Signs, Comin’ Atcha Live, Gettin’ Better, Modern Day Cowboy, Little Suzi (PhD Cover), Edison’s Medicine, and Love Song.

They have always been and continue to use more bluesy themes, while their contemporaries sang about sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. Not until Tesla’s 2004 CD, Into The Now, did the band include any synthesized beats.

The band took a hiatus and reformed in 2000 and recorded a double live album. In 2002 they were featured in the Rock Never Stops Tour alongside other 80s rock bands. Cumin’ Atcha Live appeared in the 2002 videogame Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

In 2004 they released their fifth studio album Into the Now which debuted on the Billboard album chart at number 30.

Original member and guitarist Tommy Skeoch left the band for personal reasons, and in the summer of 2006, Tesla welcomed guitarist Dave Rude.

Into The Now

Tesla’s band members have a hard past and they realize this far in their life that they can leave their mistakes in the past.

Accept me for who I am and how I am. Are you a one night stand, or with me for life? I just need an answer. I’m a musician and make music, and go up on stage every night. Either say goodbye now or stand by me. I’m not going to change my life for you. I’ve worked too hard to get this far. I’m not going back to the past and getting another kick in the ass.

Look @ Me

This song has two versions: long and short. In both, the character (male or female) is looking at their life and wondering what the fuck they did to fuck it up. Here comes a partner, for whom they sacrifice their own life. But, it’s never enough, and they wonder where their life has gone and they contemplate suicide, when in reality they can save their life. If you’re ever in an abusive relationship, suicide is not the answer. It’s your job to decide to get out. You might be better off being friends instead of lovers.

What A Shame

Again, my darling, minions, you’re alone despite living with your significant other. You’ve got a relationship in which this guy’s girlfriend has lied to him for years. There’s no love, trust or communication. There’s just deception. He knows it’s over, yet he’s asking her constantly why she is torturing him despite him giving his all. It’s over for me, and it better be over for you. I want the keys back to my house and I want the liar out.

This is a beautiful tribute song to the families and victims of 9-11. Tesla is trying to teach the world that peace, not war, is the answer. This could be anything from 9-11 to Katrina. It’s about the day the world stood still, and it hasn’t been the same since. Young children, you are our future and you can make changes to the world.

This is my honest opinion. If you took any 8-10 year old and put him or her in a big room at the UN with their favorite sweets. You bet your ass, you’d have peace within 10 minutes. I think there should be some kind of convention where each leader of the world submit a kid to the meeting and let them make peace.

Words Can’t Explain

Beautiful love song. Lately, musicians – including metal bands – have been writing songs longing for money-hungry assholes or bitches. They think because they’re looking at a physical masterpiece, that they’re at Mr. Right or Ms. Right. Look at the inside first. Get to know the person before you commit to them. Buying gifts, spending money on this person only tells ’em that they have a sugar daddy whom I can take for a ride. And all this person does is cry on the inside. He wants honesty, but he established the relationship based on her looks instead of getting to know the real person first.

And, here we fucking go again. This guy’s life is shroud in a cloud. He can’t tell fucking left from fucking right and he sends this woman these lyrics, like an asshole. She realizes she has a meal ticket. She realizes that the band has finally made it, whether it’s been two years or 25 years. What’s she gonna do? Once she’s finished taking him for a fucking ride, he’ll be left wondering what he did wrong.

Baby, come back and don’t lie, because it will be goodbye. Where is that pure, innocent girl who I met who wouldn’t take me for a ride? She realized she could take me for a ride, and she went for it. Well, now you have to decide what you want. No matter what you do or say, you know I’ll take you back.

Here’s my question, sweetheart, are you gonna take your time next time around? Or, are you gonna believe the lies? This relationship needs to be taken one step at a time.

Caught In A Dream

This is about world peace. When I first heard the title, I thought of Alice Cooper’s song, but it’s not. The main meaning of the song is that if we could just respect people for who they are, maybe this world would be peaceful and better. This band has worked hard to make their name. They’ve made a major comeback and no one can take that away from them. What they ask of you is that when you meet strangers, be kind. Because what you give is what you get. It’s not karma. It’s sharing. If the mother figure in a homeless family asks you for money for her family to eat, give it to her. Help her out. It creates love in the world. And, that’s what we need.

Miles Away

Out of the whole album, this song brings to life what it’s like for a musician to be on the road. They share the experience and what it’s about. This musician loses a close friend, family or colleague from the music industry. I see it as a tribute to Dimebag Darrell. When I hear this song, I feel Dime. I feel Kurt Cobain and every musician who have passed away. He shares his fear of getting on the stage and doing those shows and having to leave behind his family. I imagine this artist preparing for his show, and seeing what happened on Dec 8th two years ago. Will I be the next victim, they wonder. Security is getting better. Worry about going on with your musical and personal lives, and enjoying time with your children. That’s what Dime would want. I just thank God for two things. They got his brother, Vinnie Paul, off stage in time. We might’ve lost a master guitarist when Nathan Gale shot him in the back of the head five times, at least he went fast and felt no pain. Dime would not want to be a vegetable. Dime would want to be Dime. Dime is in a better place. So, stop worrying about everybody else except yourselves.

Mighty Mouse

Simply, this song is for George Bush. That’s all I have to say.

Got No Glory

One of you guys is a sucker for women. And, that is not an insult. If anything, it’s a warning that you’re finally waking up and seeing the light that this relationship you’re in is nothing but lies. You don’t want anymore candy-coated bullshit. I just want the fucking truth. Where do we stand? If these games continue, they’re only going to come back on you because then karma will spit back at you.

Come To Me

This is not a love song at all, no matter how you look at it. It’s about a good friend who is in trouble. And, maybe they’re a family member or band member. They’re in a spot in their lives where they are cut off from the world, except for this person. This friend has always been there and he’s gonna try his best to show his friend how to get out of this mess, and will let him know he’ll always be there for him. He’s giving the companionship you once had that you thought you’d lost.

Give him the chance to help you. His advice may be right or wrong, but in the long run, your friend is there. So, talk open up to them. You know that if their life falls apart, you’ll likewise be there for them. The friendship never ends.

This is a song about a woman who thinks she’s getting into a perfect, healthy, real  relationship. She envisions the wedding bells and the children, and then all of a sudden she starts seeing his abusive side. The rage, anger, beating, yelling, and emotional abuse. No one should take that shit, whether you’re a female being abused by a male or male being abused by a female.

Only You

This is a lover who’s lost their love and is pissed off about it. And, how could they leave this world without them when their death was only an accident. You’ve got this guy yelling at his bride’s picture asking why she had to die, what he’s supposed to do. All he can do is imagine and talk to her on the wall. Her body is buried and all he’s got is a tombstone.
