Tobias Gustaffson: The Vomitory Interview
Tobias is the drummer for Metal Blade’s Vomitory. Vomitory is a Sweedish death metal band, and trust me, it is always good to know what is on the mind of a Sweedish death metal drummer, so here is what he had to say:
MI: When is your birthday?
Tobias: 4th of May 1974.
MI: What is your favorite track off of Primal Massacre?
Tobias: That’s very difficult to say because I like all the songs in one way or another.
MI: Tell us something you want people to know about you.
Tobias: I’m the drummer of the band and I am the main composer.
MI: How did the band get together?
Tobias: Urban, one of the guitar player, who is my older brother was the one who started the band back in 1989. They went through a couple of other drummers and then asked me to fill in for a show and I did that so now I’m in the band.
MI: What’s it like working with your brother?
Tobias: It works pretty well. We know each other and it seems more like we’re friends that hang out together than related. We’ve always hung out with the same friends so he’s more like any friend of mine. We rarely fight, but sometimes it happens. I know what buttons to push to get him angry.
MI: Have you ever inhaled?
Tobias: No. Never. I’ve never tried it.
MI: What are your thoughts on legalizing drugs?
Tobias: I don’t think that’s a good idea. I know that you Americans have a different view on all that and we have a different view. I do not think we should legalize them.
MI: Describe your music to me.
Tobias: It’s a Swedish death metal theme. That’s where we come from and that’s what we are formed from. Our music is mostly very fast, brutal, and very intense. We focus a lot with having a good structure within a song and we’re very aware with how the song develops.
MI: What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not on the road?
Tobias: Actually I just play drums. I also ride motorcycles in the summer time….
MI: What’s the thing you hate to do when you’re not on the road?
Tobias: Actually I find doing interviews quiet boring. Phone interviews are cool but the e-mail interviews take so much time and are really boring.
MI: Who is your favorite hero?
Tobias: Darth Vader. I grew up with the first 3 Star Wars movies. They are my favorite movies and Darth Vader is the baddest.
MI: What is your favorite song to play live?
Tobias: At the moment I think I’ll say Autopsy Extravaganza. I also like to play Blessed and Forsaken from the Blood Rapture album and Forty Seconds Bloodbath from the Redemption album.
MI: How did the tour go for you guys?
Tobias: It was really fun for us. We toured with Cannibal Corpse several times before so we know those guys.
MI: What does it take to be a death metal drummer?
Tobias: The standards for a death metal drummer have increased over the years. Of course you need the speed. Looking only at the speed and counting the speed and how fast they can go blind a lot of drummers and they never look at the power. I’d say the power is as important as speed because it’s very powerful and aggressive music.
MI: Who influenced you to get into drumming?
Tobias: I would say that Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden was very important to me.
MI: What do you think about The Osbournes show?
Tobias: I think it’s cool but I don’t think you should believe everything you see there because it’s way more directed than people think. I’ve always liked Ozzy since I was a kid.
MI: If you were not a musician right now what do you think you would be doing with your life?
Tobias: I have no idea. I can’t imagine a life without playing music. I’m interested in motorcycles so maybe I’d be a hardcore biker.
MI: Where were you when 9-11 happened and how did it affect you?
Tobias: I remember exactly where I was but I guess most people do…. I was sitting in a truck with a friend and we heard it on the radio that there were planes that crashed into both of the towers. We thought it was an accident with a small plane at first, but then 5 minutes later the second plane hit the tower and we knew it was an act of terrorism. When I got home I turned on the TV immediately and I saw what was going on. It was like looking at something that wasn’t real but I knew it was real.
MI: If you were God for a week what would you change?
Tobias: I would spend the first day to think of what I would change.
MI: What is your favorite book?
Tobias: Honestly, I suck at reading books. I haven’t read a book in 10 years!
MI: Who is your favorite musician?
Tobias: Paul McCartney.
MI: If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring 3 people who would they be?
Tobias: My girlfriend, my dad, and a good friend of mine named Frederick.
MI: If you could be any super hero who would it be?
Tobias: The Hulk. He’s cool and he’s mean.
MI: What are your thoughts on George W. Bush?
Tobias: I hate discussing Politics but I think George W. is a joke since the beginning. I hope you get a new President soon. I feel like he’s doing everything his father didn’t do and he’s doing everything he can to end up in the history books. He doesn’t care what he’s doing but the main thing is that he’s doing something to be remembered.
MI: If you had 1 million dollars to donate to charity what charity would it be?
Tobias: I would donate it to kids that need it. I would really like to help children.
MI: How do you want Vomitory to be remembered in the history books?
Tobias: As one of the longest running Death Metal bands in Sweden and in the world perhaps.
MI: Do you believe in psychics?
Tobias: I’m not sure. I want to believe in them. I’m a bit skeptical on them sometimes.
MI: Have you ever had a paranormal experience?
Tobias: No not really. I’ve had déjà vu experiences.
MI: Whom would you like to dump a bucket of flesh eating ants on?
Tobias: My previous boss.
MI: If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would they be?
Tobias: Jimmy Hendrix.
MI: What do you think about the illegal downloading of music?
Tobias: I think it’s good to a certain extent. It allows people the opportunity to check out the music and then go buy the album. It is stealing though.
MI: If you had your CD player on right now what would you be listening to?
Tobias: Exhumed – Anatomy Is Destiny. It’s awesome.
MI: Do you guys plan on coming to the states soon?
Tobias: We have nothing confirmed yet but we plan on coming there soon.
MI: Do you have a message for your fans?
Tobias: Get our new album cause it’s definitely the best we’ve done. When we come to the states check us out.
MI: What is your band web site?
Thanks Tobias, and when you come to the states MusicIncider WILL check you out.
